UNEP Green Economy Report

Despite efforts over the past decades to demonstrate the inter-dependency between the environment and human well-being, the environment continues to receive marginal attention in economic policymaking. Worldwide, billions of dollars are spent annually to subsidise carbon-emitting fossil fuels. Meanwhile, investment in renewable energy remains inadequate, posing a threat to affordable and secure energy supply. Investment in the agricultural sector including water and soil conservation has actually declined in the last ten years in the developing world, threatening food security when the world's major food producers are subsidised to turn food into biofuels.

How green is your fiscal stimulas package?

The financial times has assessed the bail out packages of a number of governments globally on the basis of improving the green competiveness of economies. The proposed round of government spending in economies across the world represents a unique opportunity for green businesses. The increased investment could pull energy consumers towards using more renewables, create millions of new jobs in green industries and help to create a more efficient, low-carbon future.

Jobs in the new green economy?

There are a number of sites devoting themselves to green employment opportunities but it is difficult to determine how successful they are? or if people are satisfied with outcomes... over the next coming months, a green recruiter will be featured below...

The shrinking employment opportunities in the financial services sector in the United States has resulted in structural unemployment which may not be fully dealt with a green new deal. The skils required to work in the renewables sector to enhance the uptake and development of new technolgy require college educations and years of specialist training. Other sectors of the labour market will benefit but education will be key for the United States to reap the benefits of the green revolution.

Apart from the main Green Economy Report the UNEP in response to the unfolding financial and economic crisis, an immediate effort will be made to produce a discussion paper on a Global Green New Deal.
